What an interesting way to get people interested in reading! Book trailers are like movie trailers, but for books! You can find them all over the internet now, but here is a site that's featuring them on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/booktrailers

1) Yelp Entry -- I think you should at least have a place where people can provide an opinion -- and have basic information. For the sake of authenticity, I think that it's important that your team only places the "basic information" online, and let the yelpers do all the hard work of reviewing your restaurant. Any restaurant that tries to hijack Yelp is viewed upon negatively, so for that reason, we should tread carefully here.
2) Google / Yahoo Maps / Map "Business Search" engines: It is always good to be searchable on Google Maps. There is a place where you can "add your business" to the map, and doing so is imperative once you open your restaurant so that people searching the map will find you. Goog-411 is also becoming a popular way to find businesses (at least among some of us), so it may be good to find out how to get in that directory as well.
3) Facebook Fan page. This is kind of an "extra" one, but anything that shows up in facebook feeds when people join is good.
4) Facebook event for opening. Not sure if you had any plans for grand opening, but this would be a great place to publicize. Have a special offer of some sort associated with the opening...etc. Invite all your friends, have your friends invite friends, make it an all weekend event... whatever.

Yelp: Now that our entry is up and running, we need to be active in maintaining it. Do we actually accept credit cards? What are our hours? The reviews are still positive, but if the reviews go south, do we have a way of addressing them? Will we address them or let them be? I have been monitoring the entry and reviewing the comments. Hopefully more people give us reviews so that we can read and respond to the concerns.

Amanda's is going to have a grand opening month to celebrate the restaurant's opening. We're planning to have speakers and nutritionist to the restaurant, free tastings, and events such as downtown berkeley tours.

RE: Create a Facebook Group for the Restaurant

I agree that Facebook can be a venue for a restaurant, but there needs to be something of value on the Facebook page so try this:
Cooking healthy at home, perhaps a receipe a month that you use in the restaurant
If you have something unique going on in the restaurant like art, or wait staff uniforms, or furniture, what can you comment on Facebook that make people either relive the in restaurant experience or want to go there.
For example search for Punch Pizza on Facebook and see my comments. Try this link http://www.facebook.com/pages/Saint-Paul-MN/Highland-Park-Punch-Pizza/21309801560
I believe the time is right for a restauarant with a focus on nutrition, now can we get my kids to eat vegetables?

This is a very helpful tool. Great formula Acquisition Cost = ((Website Development Costs / Expected Life of website) + Monthly Promotion Costs + Monthly Maintenance Costs) / New customers) I assume that Monthly Promotion Costs = SEO/SEM

How about giving away free bottled water. I hate the fact that you have to pay for good water. When you ask for water at a restaurant they give these little bitty cups. Water is the is the second most important thing for humans next to air. So give away water with meals.

have a special Cal or Berkeley High off menu item, like In and Out's "animal style" - show your id and order the "CAL" and get a burger fries and a drink for a special price, or order the "B-High" and get . . .
Maybe try to connect with health, science or business teachers at B-high to do a lesson on sustainability or entrepreneurship.

since Amanda's is woman owned, there might be a to get the work out through some of the various woman focused athletic activities in the bay. In October there is the Nike Woman's marathon in SF, I'm not sure what is involved with becoming a race sponsor, but maybe there is a way to have some presences at the event. I am going to try to run it, there is a random drawing this year for spots, and I'd be happy to wear an Amanda's jersey if I get in.

What about getting a booth at the various farmer's markets and doing some free samples or even selling product in the run-up to the opening. I'm not sure what is required logistically for this but I know there are 3 or 4 east bay farmer's markets. Given the fresh and healthy approach that Amanda's is taking, a Farmer's Market might offer pool potential customers.

Don't focus on the competition. Focus solely on the one thing you offer that your target audience most wants. That will make you stand out. Is it fast, fresh, organic, healthy, delicious, choices? Which one thing do you do best that people are craving?

Restaurant Success Rates
By: AmandaW,
Jan 28 2008, 7:55 PM EST
It is a myth that 9 out of 10 restaurants fail. In reality, "one in four restaurants close or change ownership within their first year of business. Over three years, that number rises to three in five."
